Cupping and bloodletting may share a page, but they are not interchangeable. This guide explains the difference and the information to share before either one.
Traditional treatment names can conceal differences that matter enormously. When a clinic lists cupping, bloodletting and acupuncture together, it is worth confirming exactly which procedures are on offer before you make a booking. The names alone rarely tell you whether the skin will be broken.
In dry cupping, suction acts on skin that stays unbroken. Bloodletting deliberately pierces the skin, which introduces separate risks and calls for a distinct aftercare conversation. Sharing a paragraph or a price list does not make the two equivalent.

Before any technique that breaks the skin is even contemplated, tell the practitioner about bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medication and existing skin problems. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers cupping to Lane Cove clients and will set out the technique she has in mind and how it relates to the goal the two of you have agreed.
Stories about historical use, or a general recommendation printed in a brochure, are no replacement for a clear description of the physical steps involved. Ask for that account in plain language, and ask what the alternatives are, including doing nothing further for now.
Select an ordinary activity or symptom to come back to at follow-up, and factor in comfort and skin healing when you discuss how things went. Any visible mark counts as just one piece of information. Whether to keep going should depend on why you sought help, how you responded and what other avenues remain.
If a clinic's website blurs the line between dry cupping and skin-breaking methods, ask directly before booking anything. Precise answers are a reasonable expectation from any provider, and vagueness on this point is a good reason to look elsewhere. Clarity here protects you and makes it easier to give genuinely informed consent on the day.
