Moxibustion comes in several forms, so one photograph cannot show how every session runs. Here is what to ask about the form proposed and your past reactions.
Moxibustion is not one single, standard procedure. Practitioners work with various forms of mugwort material and several ways of delivering warmth, so a single photo of a moxa stick on a clinic website cannot show you how every session will unfold.
Before a session, find out which form of moxa is being considered and why it suits your situation. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, whose Lane Cove clients sometimes receive moxibustion, will describe the choices in everyday language, including how close the heat source sits to the skin and how long each application lasts.
Mention any earlier reaction to smoke or heat, even one that happened well away from a clinic, perhaps near a campfire, incense or a fireplace. Those experiences are relevant when choosing an application, and they help Christine anticipate what might bother you.
Your real concern is whether one specific method agrees with your body. Which product looks the most traditional, or gives off the strongest smell, is beside the point. A plain answer about suitability is worth more than a story about where the mugwort was grown.
Christine's instructions are tailored to you. No video tutorial or enthusiastic friend can tell you what your own skin and lungs will tolerate.
When comparing practitioners who offer moxibustion, notice whether they explain the form they use and invite you to raise sensitivities without prompting. That openness is part of a well-structured consultation, and it usually extends to other parts of care, such as how aftercare questions are handled once you have gone home.
